Bad Breath or Halitosis is a health complication that can happen to anyone at any time. People who breathe through their mouth while asleep normally experience bad breath in the morning. Bad breath in the morning is a normal thing, but when it persists throughout the day then you should consider it as a problem and try to find a solution to it.
Bad Breath, medically known as Halitosis, refers to an unpleasant smell that comes out of the mouth of a person. No one is interested in getting bad breath and no one will intentionally cause his/her own bad breath but if you've found yourself in this situation, this piece may help you identify the cause of it.
Below are some main causes of bad breath:
1. The food and drink we take.
Strongly flavoured foods like onions and garlic affect the smell that comes out of the mouth. If you most of the times skip brushing your teeth, food debris remaining in the mouth may attract bad breath causative bacteria which may lead to bad breath.
Drinks like coffee and alcohol are also capable of causing bad breath.
2. Dry mouth.
This can be caused by continuously breathing through the mouth or having salivary gland problems. The saliva in the mouth helps to clear away food particles.
Therefore, having a dry mouth will reduce the cleaning of food particles in the mouth leaving some food particles behind for the bacteria in the mouth to act on it.

3. Tobacco consumption or smoking.
Tobacco is capable of causing bad breath of a person. Users of tobacco stand the chance to suffer from gum related diseases which put them at risk of developing oral cancer. Most of these gum related diseases also cause bad breath.
4. Medical conditions.
Bad breath is considered a symptom of some diseases. Diseases like diabetes, lung infections, bronchitis, kidney and liver diseases may have a link with bad breath.
Therefore having such diseases may put you at risk of getting Halitosis.
5. Poor oral hygiene.
Poor oral hygiene is probably the most common cause of bad breath. If the teeth are not properly and regularly brushed or flossed, food debris that is left in your mouth, between your teeth, your gums, and on your tongue will be broken down by the bacteria in your mouth which may result to Halitosis.
